Vision Statement: The Community of Hope Tutoring Program helps at-risk elementary school students bring academic achievement up to grade level and provides meaningful jobs for high school students. We go beyond reading and math to reach the heart and spirit of each individual involved with the program. We provide an atmosphere that encourages students and tutors and builds a better community.
Common Questions:
1. How do I get my child into the program?
Get an application from your child's guidance counselor and call the program to check for availability of space for your child. Children are registered on a first come, first serve basis, and then a waiting list is established.
2. Is there one-on-one tutoring?
Yes, students are tutored one-on-one for an hour with a high school tutor.
3. When do students come?
Students in K-2nd come on Monday and Wednesday. Students in 3rd-5th come on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Times are 3:30-5:30.
4. How much does it cost?
There is a $10 fee for one seven-week quarter.
5. How are the tutors selected?
High school students (10th-12th grade) go through an application and interview process. Students are selected based on high academic performance, experience with children, desire to serve their community, and work ethic.
6. Who is eligible for tutoring services?
We serve kindergarten through 5th grade students attending Meridian Public Schools.
7. What do the students do for the other hour when they are not with their tutor?
Students participate in small group activities led by a certified teacher. They work on language arts activities, cooperative learning, and self-expression. The goal in small group is to continue the learning process while increasing children's self-esteem and showing children a larger world.
